The map below shows highway accidents displayed in a heat map to show areas of most intensity. The data is collected from the Fatality Analysis Reporting System from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration in 2014. Check the map out at communitymappingforhealthequity.org.
The Cooperative Research Centre for Water Sensitive Cities created a map of Melbourne suburbs most vulnerable by heat waves. The map identifies areas based on risk factors including housing types, age, health and socio-economic status of the population. The research finds a clear association between suburbs with extreme heat vulnerability and the number of hospital emergency visits or ambulance callouts on extremely hot days. Extreme heat events or heatwaves pose a risk to the health of individuals and a surge in the demand for emergency services.
The map can be used by emergency management sector, government agencies, non-government organizations and communities in order to prevent, prepare, respond and recover to climate change and the surge of heat waves.
