In the UK, Health-based places of safety are part of a mental health unit on a mental health hospital or acute hospital site, or part of an accident and emergency department in an acute hospital.

Section 136 of the Mental Health Act allows for someone believed by the police to have a mental disorder, and who may cause harm to themselves or another, to be detained in a public place and taken to a safe place where a mental health assessment can be carried out.

Places of safety include hospitals, care homes, or any suitable places where the occupier is willing to receive the person while the assessment is completed.

Spotting Smokers

Researchers at the University of Otago in Wellington, New Zealand used geospatial data and public health data to estimate visual exposure to smoking at bars and cafés for public outdoor spaces in downtown Wellington. They found that the maps indicate that streets with many retail shops and hospitality areas had high numbers of visible smokers, especially in the evening if there were more than 50 people. The findings of this and similar research could support the expansion of smokefree public spaces.
