Diagnosed Diabetes Incidence Rate By County 2013

Today’s map shows the incidence rate per 1,000 population of diagnosed diabetes by county for the year 2013. From the map we can see a a clearly various southern states have a higher incidence indicated by the dark shading. In contrast, we see there are lower rates of diagnosed diabetes in counties within various Western states indicated by the yellow/yellow orange shading. Interestingly, we can see a similar pattern when comparing the previous map of obesity prevalence by county for the year 2013. Why might this be?

From the map we can a large clusters of practitioners providing buprenorphine treatment practice in the southern and eastern states and in western states such as California. Why might this be?

Percent of Uninsured Living with HIV By County 2014 (Ages 13 and Older)

Check out this map which shows the percent of people living with HIV who were uninsured by county for the year of 2014 ages 13 and older. From the map we can see that a large portion of counties within Hawaii, the north east, and some midwest states had some of the lowest percentages of people with HIV who where uninsured indicated by the yellow shading. In contrast states in the south and west had some of the highest percentages of people living with HIV who were uninsured.  We can see Alaska and Texas were predominantly shaded dark, indicating percentages ranging as high as 19 to 39.

Gonorrhea is the second most commonly reported sexually transmitted infection (STI) and providers are struggling with ways to treat the infection due to antibiotic resistances. The Availability of Food

These maps from 2010 show the availability of grocery store locations and also the percentage of people who had a car to get there. The topic of food availability is already an interesting conversation.. is there enough food? Is there enough food, but it just isn’t distributed evenly? Why is healthy food more expense then unhealthy? Why has food become more of a business then of a way to survive? Take a look at these maps, because they bring another problem into the mix! Transportation and accessibility.

The information for the maps was collected from the USDA Food Environment Atlas and the maps were created by Meharry Medical College.

FARS National Highway Accident Intensity Map- 2014

The map below shows highway accidents displayed in a heat map to show areas of most intensity. The data is collected from the Fatality Analysis Reporting System from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration in 2014. Check the map out at communitymappingforhealthequity.org.
