Rate of Self Reported Pesticide Related Illness By State 2014



Today’s map shows the rate of self reported pesticide related illness by state for the year of 2014 per 100,000 person. From the map we can see some states had rates ranging as low as 0.00 to 0.27 indicated by the yellow shading. In contrast some states, such as Alaska, Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, Arkansas, New York, Kansas and Virginia had rates as high as 0.87 to 2.56 indicated by the dark blue shading. However, its important to note that because these are self-reported rates the date is subjected to under-reporting. In addition, because these exposures are self-reported both the type of pesticide and the degree of illness associated with the exposure may be mis-classified since the designation by the poison control center for both is based on the description provided by the caller.

Average Daily PM 2.5 By County in 2011

MOTD7_19_17_AvgPM252011Particulate Matter (PM) are small particles that contain microscopic solids and liquid droplets that are suspended in the air which can be inhaled and cause health effects. PM range in size, but particles less than 10 mm present the greatest threat. Some particles are emitted directly from a source such as, smokestacks, fires, construction sites, etc. and others are a result of complex atmospheric reactions [1].

Check out this map that shows the average daily PM 2.5 by county in 2011. From the graph we see a three distinct darkly shaded clusters indicating a high amount of daily exposure. The first cluster includes counties in Nevada and Utah. The second cluster includes counties within Colorado, Wyoming, Kansas and Nebraska. The third and most prominent includes counties within various southern states such as, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, Tennessee, Kentucky, Indiana, Illinois, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Virginia, West Virginia and North and South Carolina. In contrast, we can see states such as Oregon, Texas, California and Arizona are shaded yellow indicating a lower daily average.

Mean PM 2.5 Levels in Air

PM, or particulate matter, are tiny solid or liquid particles found in the atmosphere. Particulate matter is considered the most dangerous form of air pollution as the tiny particles can easily be absorbed by the lungs into the blood stream causing many health issues. The International Agency for Research on Cancer and the World Health Organization both consider particulates to be a Group 1 Carcinogen. PM 2.5 are particulates with a diameter of 2.5 micrometers. PM 2.5 particulates are especially dangerous as their small size allows them to penetrate the lungs more easily. We have taken data from the EPA and created a map that shows the mean PM 2.5 levels across the United States. The Most Distinctive Causes of Death by State, 2001-2010

This map put out by the CDC, shows the most distinctive causes of death in the United States. This map is colored coded to be easier to read and as you can see the key below the map shows what the cause of death is. There are interesting limitations to keep in mind while looking at the map. On the CDC site they explain “A limitation of this map is that it depicts only 1 distinctive cause of death for each state. All of these were significantly higher than the national rate, but there were many others also significantly higher than the national rate that were not mapped. The map is also predisposed to showing rare causes of death — for 22 of the states, the total number of deaths mapped was under 100. Using broader cause-of-death categories or requiring a higher threshold for the number of deaths would result in a different map. These limitations are characteristic of maps generally and are why these maps are best regarded as snapshots and not comprehensive statistical summaries” (cdc.gov). Weather.com Allergy Maps

Weather.com has some pretty interesting maps related to air quality. If you are curious about the amount of tree, weed, or grass pollen, mold, and breathing index within the United States, take a look at their site! Below is a screenshot of one of their maps for mold spore counts, green indicates low counts and red shows areas of high counts. Go to weather.com to see all of the maps! What does your area look like?

Allergy Forecast- Pollen.com

Personally, my allergies have been horrible so far! I recently heard that pollen this year is worst then it has been in recent seasons. Taking a good allergy medicine is key, but you can also protect yourself by being knowledgeable about the pollen count in your area. I found an allergy forecast map on Pollen.com that shows you the allergy levels in your given area across the United States. You can look at the general prediction for each state on the site which is colored coded- green for low, light green for low-medium, yellow for medium, orange for medium-high, and red for high. Also you can click your state or area of desire for a more detailed report. Once you click the state, you can enter your zip code or pick your city on the drop down menu.
