Half the nation’s uninsured live in 4% of counties

A study conducted for the Associated Press by the the Minnesota Health Data Center found that half of the uninsured live in just 116 of the nation’s 3,143 counties, and half of the 19-39-year-old demographic lives in 108 counties. Five percent of the nation’s uninsured live in Los Angeles County alone, where 2 million people remain uninsured. Another million uninsured live in Harris County, Texas, in Houston. Other areas are Cook County, Illinois, Miami-Dade County, Florida, and Dallas County, Texas.

The Minnesota researchers used Census data from the 2011 Small Area Health Insurance Estimates, the only source of annual estimates of uninsured people for all counties.
