In an upcoming International Journal of Health Geographics, researchers demonstrated geographic profiling, a widely used criminology technique, to be useful in identifying the sources of a recent malaria outbreak in Cairo and reconstructing an infamous cholera outbreak in Victorian London. Applying the technique to infectious diseases helped focus interventions. According to an article in Wired, geographic profiling can pinpoint highly probable locations for infectious diseases, even if they are at opposite ends of the search area.
