World Tuberculosis Day and GIS

Scientists, activists, and global health agencies used World Tuberculosis Day, March 24th, to highlight the threat of drug-resistant strains of the disease. South Africa has the world’s third largest Tuberculosis (TB) epidemic, which has been heightened by the country’s HIV epidemic. Among the tools to tackle it in South Africa is GIS. Health Minister Aaron Motsoalediis is expected to launch new Geographical Information System (GIS) software which enables better management of TB patients, including information that matches area and individual profiles.

Here are some online TB maps: Tuberculosis incidence rate (2006); Multidrug-resistance among reported TB cases (2006); World Health Organization (WHO) maps concerning TB (pdf).
