[CBPR] FracTracker – a web-based, public participation geographic information system

The Center for Healthy Environments and Communities (CHEC) of the University of Pittsburgh Graduate School of Public Health established FracTracker. FracTracker is a web-based, public participation geographic information system focusing on the natural gas industry using volunteered geographic information.

FracTracker and CHEC’s are currently conducting bottom-up, environmental public health research, focusing on the gas extraction operations occurring in the Marcellus Shale region. Their project documents perceived impacts of people who live in proximity to those industrial operations through creating a map.
