A hotspot management based GIS system has been used in India as part of a national control program. A team from India’s National Institute of Malaria Research worked with a team from the National Vector Borne Disease Control Programme and the State Health Department to use GIS to pinpoint trouble spots for timely preventive action. The system identifies hotspots from which malaria flares up every time conditions favorable for transmission occur.
The main advantage of the GIS platform is fast data updating – as soon as data is entered, revised maps highlight the trouble spots.
